Feel Good Blueberry Banana Smoothie

There is one snack that I am always in the mood for no matter how I feel.  I always have the ingredients on hand, and this snack has gotten me through pregnancy, nursing, and many other ups and downs that my body has been through.  The best part about it is it’s good for you!

There are so many great things about a blueberry banana smoothie.  It’s healthy, it’s tasty, and it goes down easy.

The ingredients serve a purpose in making you feel better:
Bananas – replenish potassium, an important electrolyte
Blueberries – ward off UTI’s and are packed with antioxidants
Yogurt – provides protein and probiotics

Here’s how I make the smoothie:

Feel Good Banana Smoothie (serves 1)

Ingredients

  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt (I look for high-protein yogurt with live and active cultures)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.  You can add protein powder and/or ground flaxseed meal if you like to give your smoothie a boost.  If you like a thicker smoothie (with more protein and probiotics), use more yogurt and less milk.

Almond milk is also great in place of the milk.  You could go vegan/dairy-free by leaving out the yogurt (or using a dairy-free yogurt substitute) and using almond milk.  When I was nursing, I cut back on dairy a lot (I read that babies can be sensitive to it…making them gassy and fussy) so unsweetened almond milk was my favorite substitute.  I still like the flavor of it in smoothies.
